The other says work-from-home levels have barely moved in three years. That contradiction is the real story of remote work in 2026 and understanding why both are true tells you more about the future than any single prediction.
Here is the tension. According to JLL's 2026 tracking, roughly 55% of Fortune 100 companies now require five-day office attendance, up from about 5% in 2021. "Remote work" is often used as shorthand for "working from home," but the future involves at least seven distinct models that get blurred together in headlines:

- Flexible location - employees are tied to a country or region (for legal and tax reasons) but not to a specific office.
- Global employment - companies hire across borders using local entities, contractors, or employer-of-record services.
- AI-assisted work - human work augmented by AI tools for drafting, summarizing, coding, translating, and coordinating.
These models combine rather than compete. A company can be hybrid in its home country, fully remote for engineering, globally distributed for support, and heavily asynchronous across all three. Remote Work in 2026: Where Are We Now?
Before forecasting, it helps to be precise about the present. A few well-measured facts:
Overall work-from-home levels have plateaued, not collapsed. WFH Research's Survey of Working Arrangements and Attitudes (SWAA) the longest-running US tracker, run by Stanford's Nick Bloom with Jose Maria Barrero and Steven Davis found that about 25% of paid full workdays in the US were worked from home in November 2025. Measured by paid workdays, remote work exploded in 2020, retreated through 2022, and has been roughly flat since 2023 at about five times the pre-pandemic level. That is neither growth nor decline it is stabilization at a permanently elevated baseline.
Measured by large-company policy, remote work is contracting. The Fortune 100 shift toward five-day mandates (Amazon, JPMorgan Chase, Goldman Sachs, AT&T and others) is genuine, and it influences other firms: surveys suggest around half of businesses say major corporations' RTO decisions shaped their own.
Measured by job postings and small-to-mid-sized firms, the picture is steadier. Fully remote roles have become scarcer at the top of the market and more concentrated in specific occupations software, design, marketing, data, support while smaller companies continue using remote flexibility as a hiring advantage against larger firms' mandates. ZipRecruiter data suggests companies with strict RTO policies have experienced measurably higher turnover, which is one reason not every employer follows the giants.
Measured globally, remote work is growing slowly in some markets and static in others, with adoption tracking cultural norms, commute lengths, housing patterns, and industry mix.
Why do headlines seem contradictory? Because a five-day mandate at one famous company is news, while 25% of national workdays quietly happening at kitchen tables is not. Policy announcements are events; behavior is a slow-moving average. The future will be decided by the average, not the announcements.

AI is the force most likely to change remote work in ways that current data cannot fully capture which is exactly why claims about it need discipline.
What is already happening (fact, not forecast): AI tools now routinely handle meeting transcription and summaries, first-draft documents, code generation and review, translation, knowledge retrieval, customer-support triage, and research synthesis. Microsoft's 2025 Work Trend Index a survey of 31,000 knowledge workers across 31 countries found 46% of leaders saying their organizations were already using AI agents to automate at least some business processes, and 78% considering AI-specific hires. Adoption is uneven: the same research shows a persistent gap between leaders (67% familiar with AI agents) and employees (40%).
The critical distinction: task automation vs. job automation. Most jobs are bundles of tasks. Current evidence supports the claim that AI automates tasks summarizing, drafting, formatting, triaging faster than it eliminates occupations, which also involve judgment, accountability, relationships, and context. A customer-support role may lose its ticket-drafting task and gain an AI-supervision task. The occupation persists; its composition changes. Claims that AI will "eliminate remote jobs" wholesale are not supported by the employment data available in 2026, though task displacement in heavily routinized roles is a genuine risk worth watching.
Why this matters specifically for remote work: remote work runs on written, digital, structured communication precisely the medium AI processes best. A distributed team's Slack history, documents, and tickets are machine-readable in a way that hallway conversation never was. This cuts both ways: remote workers may gain the most from AI assistance, and their output may also be the most measurable and comparable.
The necessary caveats: AI systems still produce confident errors (hallucinations), raise confidentiality questions when fed internal documents, and cannot own decisions. The evidence against declaring it permanent: hybrid structure is tightening (fully flexible hybrid fell from ~40% of programs in 2022 to ~14% in 2026 per JLL, replaced by fixed-day requirements), and a loosening labor market gives employers leverage to keep tightening. 3. The Rise of Asynchronous Work
If hybrid answers "where," asynchronous answers "when" and it may matter more.
Async work means communication does not require simultaneous availability. It does not mean no communication, no meetings, or slower decisions. It means decisions travel through written proposals, recorded updates, and documented context instead of requiring everyone in a room (physical or virtual) at once.

Remote work broke the assumption that a company's talent pool ends at commuting distance. Global hiring infrastructure employer-of-record (EOR) services, international payroll platforms, contractor management systems has matured into a real industry, letting even small companies employ someone in another country without opening an entity there.
What this plausibly means: companies gain access to skills and cost structures beyond their home market; workers in lower-cost or smaller markets gain access to employers who previously never saw them. Yes, the interesting question is how much, and for what.
Today, most companies pay by location. The common models:
- Location-based pay: salary tied to the employee's local market. Most common.
- National bands: one salary range per country, ignoring city differences. Growing.
- Tiered geography: a few zones (e.g., high-cost metro / rest of country) with set differentials.
- Geo-neutral pay: same pay for same role anywhere (usually within a country). Rare, used as a talent magnet by some remote-first firms.
The economics pull in two directions. Employers hiring globally are partly seeking cost differences, which sustains location-based pay. But competition for scarce skills pushes pay toward the highest-paying market for those skills regardless of the worker's address senior engineers in secondary cities already command near-metro packages. Beyond geography, several compensation shifts are visible in current practice:
- Transparency is expanding. Pay-range disclosure laws in a growing number of US states and the EU Pay Transparency Directive (phasing in through 2026) make salary bands public in more markets. Remote roles posted across jurisdictions increasingly must show ranges to comply somewhere, which effectively discloses them everywhere.
- Bands are formalizing. As remote teams span markets, ad-hoc pay becomes indefensible; structured bands with published levels are becoming the norm at remote-first companies.
- Outcome-linked pay is being tested, particularly in sales, support, and content roles where output is measurable though evidence that it works outside those roles is thin.

What remote work does not automatically deliver is "the same salary everywhere." 7. Which Jobs Are Most Likely to Stay Remote?
Occupations resist or accept remote work based on identifiable characteristics, not fashion. Work tends to stay remote when it has:
- Digital output - the deliverable is code, documents, designs, analysis, or decisions.
- Computer-based workflow - the tools are already online.
- Measurable deliverables - output can be evaluated without observing effort.
- Low physical-presence requirements - no equipment, patients, or sites involved.
- Communication that survives writing - coordination works through text and calls.
By these criteria, the durable remote categories are software development, data and analytics, design, writing and content, digital marketing, finance and accounting operations, consulting and research, project management, customer support, and portions of administrative work. First, occupation is necessary but not sufficient employer policy decides whether a remote-capable job is actually remote, which is why identical roles at two companies can have opposite arrangements. Roughly 60% of US jobs cannot be done from home at all healthcare delivery, manufacturing, construction, hospitality, logistics, laboratory science, maintenance, and most frontline services. No technology on the current horizon changes the physics of nursing or the location of a weld.
But "not remote" does not mean "no flexibility." The plausible evolution for location-dependent work is different: self-scheduling and shift-swap platforms, compressed weeks, remote-capable portions of otherwise physical jobs (documentation, training, telehealth triage, remote equipment monitoring), and administrative flexibility. If remote work becomes more AI-assisted, more asynchronous, and more global, the skill premium shifts accordingly.

Input-based measurement hours online, keyboard activity, green status dots is easy to game, corrosive to trust, and poorly correlated with value. Outcome-based measurement deliverables, quality, deadlines, customer impact is harder to set up but is the only approach that makes distributed work legible. The uncomfortable answer: monitoring is increasing, and much of it will not make anyone more productive.
Attendance tracking has already jumped (69% of employers, up from 45% in a year, per CBRE). Software monitoring activity tracking, screenshot tools, AI-driven "productivity analytics" grew through the remote-work era and is now being extended with AI that can summarize what employees do, not just log it.
The distinction that matters is visibility versus surveillance. Visibility means outcomes, progress, and blockers are legible to the team this is healthy and remote work needs more of it. Surveillance means observing inputs and behavior and the evidence is that it degrades trust, encourages performative activity (fake mouse movement, "coffee badging" into offices for a few hours to be seen which 43% of US hybrid employees admit to), and pushes exactly the employees with options to leave.

The most persistent objection to remote work is cultural: "you can't build culture over Zoom." The evidence-based response is that culture was never made of hallways it is made of systems, behaviors, expectations, and leadership, and offices were simply one delivery mechanism.
What strong distributed cultures are converging on:
- Documentation as culture. Written values, decision logs, and onboarding paths make culture explicit instead of ambient.
