2020 BMW 8-SERIES GRAN COUPE

If you want to get your hands on the new BMW 8 Series, the Gran Coupe version will make you pause. Even though the two-door version of the 8 Series is a massive car, there isn’t enough room for adult passengers in the back. If you don’t mind having your favorite dog in there when you are alone, but what if you want to share the driving experience with friends and family?

Hence the 8 Series Gran Coupe. This is why having four doors is more fun in the real world.

The good thing is the original design of the 8 Series two-door is also evident in the Gran Coupe version. In fact, both cars are almost identical from the front bumper to the A-pillar, but that’s where the similarities end. Beyond that, everything is unique to the 8 Series Gran Coupe.

Obviously, the Gran Coupe has four doors, so BMW had to make it bigger still. The 8 Series Gran Coupe is nine inches longer and 2.2 inches taller than the original 8 Series Coupe/Convertible. It also happens to be 1.2 inches wider for a more planted look. Enhancing the stance is a rear track measuring 65.8 inches which, mind you, is the widest track of any BMW automobile in existence.

The 2020 BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe comes in three flavors. The base model 840i, 840i xDrive & there’s the M850i xDrive Gran Coupe.

The standard BMW 840i Gran Coupe offers up 335 horsepower and 368 lb-ft of torque. The M850i Gran Coupe, thanks to its larger V8 engine, chucks out 523 horsepower and 553 lb-ft of torque, just like the two-door version. As with the coupe, both engines mate up to an eight-speed automatic transmission.

BMW claims the standard 4,262-pound 840i Gran Coupe model can hit 60 mph in 4.9 seconds from a standstill. The all-wheel drive 840i xDrive will do the sprint in a slightly faster 4.6 seconds. Finally, the M850i Gran Coupe will hit 60 in 3.7 seconds.

Without a doubt, that is a seriously quick 0-60 time, but there is a price to pay for all that power and all that luxury. The 2020 BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe is fantastically heavy. The beefier powertrain tips the curb weight of the M850i to a whopping 4,758 pounds. To put that in perspective, the range-topping four-door 8 Series weighs as much as a 4,798-pound Ford F-150 4×4 SuperCab with a 5.0-liter V8 engine.

On the flip side, all that heft means the 2020 BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe comes with every technological feature under the sun. Standard equipment on the 840i models includes 18-inch wheels, a panoramic moonroof, and a 464-watt Harman Kardon sound system, and that’s just the tip of the iceberg. The M850i xDrive’s standard equipment list is even more impressive, with an M Sport differential and brakes, Adaptive M suspension, Active Roll Stabilization and multi-function ventilated seats.

Optional equipment includes various driver assistance packages, as well as a carbon fiber trim on the M850i. A 1,400-watt, 16-speaker Bowers & Wilkins sound system is optional, as is a Cooling and High Performance Tire Package.
