2020 BMW X2
The 2020 BMW X2
is the X1’s stylish and fun sibling. They share a common vehicle platform,
including the same base engine and interior design, but diverge from there.
Where the X1 succeeds at being a fun but utilitarian crossover, the X2 offers
more performance, more distinctive style and more controversy. That extra
performance comes courtesy of the sportier, more powerful M35i variant that's
exclusive to the X2. The controversy comes from that style, which certainly
won't be for everyone, and that, importantly, reduces the space and versatility
many folks expect from an SUV.
That BMW offers
choice in this growing segment can't be viewed as a bad thing, however. Some
may like the X1, others may prefer the X2. Still, it's important to check out
the segments other strong entries, including the Volvo XC40 and all-new 2019
Audi Q3. Considering a non-luxury vehicle like the surprisingly luxurious Mazda
CX-5 is a good idea too. Yet, the 2020 X2 remains a compelling entry for those
who prioritize style and performance.
Although the
interior design of the X2 is not as expressive as its exterior, the cabin is
well equipped and well built. The driving position is excellent, and all X2
controls are within reach of the driver. The headroom of the rear seat is
narrow, but otherwise, passenger comfort should be acceptable to most people.
BMW offers several upholstery color options, both in synthetic and genuine
leathers, as well as five different trimmings. Due to its more formative
exterior, the X2 is not as practical as the square X1. In our tests, we fit
five of our handbags behind the back seat and 15 in total with the rear seats
folded, facing seven and 19 for the X1.
An infotainment system with 8.8-inch touch screen with navigation is standard and works with the intuitive and attractive BMW iDrive software interface, which can also be controlled by a rotary control mounted on the center console. The upgrade to the Premium package adds a front screen. The capacity of Apple CarPlay is standard, but the capacity of Android Auto is not offered. A seven-speaker audio system will be good enough for occasional listeners, but a Harman / Kardon premium sound system can be added and must attract audiophiles.
The BMW X2 2020
shares its standard powertrain with the X1 boxier, which consists of a
turbocharged 228 hp four-cylinder, an eight-speed automatic transmission and
front-wheel drive. BMW calls this model the sDrive28i; The xDrive28 is the
optional all-wheel drive version. The engine is a charm: eager to rev, soft and
silky, and a lot of brave. On our test track, the X2 xDrive28i with all-wheel
drive broke a decent 6.4-second run from zero to 60 mph; 0.1 seconds behind the
X1 xDrive28i and the Volvo XC40 T5. Faster still is the Mercedes-Benz GLA250,
which achieved a time of 5.8 seconds. The high performance M35i model engine
has been tuned to pump 302 horsepower and flown at 60 mph in just 4.6 seconds
on our test track. As with the X1, the X2 has a hard ride, especially with the
sports suspension. Driving on rough stretches of road, the occupants will feel
almost every imperfection that this subcompact crossover finds. Balance is a
high level of agility in a twisted path. It is a pleasure to jump into the fast
corners and reward the driver with his predictable nature.
